How to Make an Energy-Efficient Laundry Room in Your Custom Home

Failing to create a true energy-efficient laundry room will only result in pricey utility bills and wasted energy.

The laundry room is one of the most overlooked rooms in your house, but also one of the most important when it comes to your bank account. In fact, your dryer and washer are two of the most pricey and most used appliances in your custom home. The average American family goes through countless laundry loads every year, so it is important to prioritize energy efficiency. Failing to create a true energy-efficient laundry room will only result in pricey utility bills and wasted energy. Fortunately, it is very easy to create an energy-efficient laundry room and one that will save you from spending thousands of dollars on detergent, electricity, and water. Read on for a few tips on creating an energy-efficient laundry room in your custom home!

Buy an Energy Star Certified Dryer and Washer

The best way to save some money on water and electrical bills every time you do your laundry is by purchasing an Energy Star certified dryer and washer. Energy Star certified washers used about 25 percent less energy and about 33 percent less water than your regular washing machines. Energy Star washers help people save plenty of money on energy costs over the lifetime of the product. These dryers also use less energy than your average dryer, which saves users hundreds in energy costs.

Avoid Washing Your Clothes in Hot Water

Washing clothes in hot water is a serious no-no when it comes to saving some money on utility bills. Instead of using hot water, opt for some cold or warm water to save you some energy. Opting for warm water over hot water within your washing machine can cut back on energy use in half. Using some cold water will save you even more energy.

Invest in a Nice Drying Rack

Not everything has to be dried in your dryer. In fact, not all of your clothing items should be dried in your dryer, as the high heat can harm or shrink certain materials. For delicate materials, like lace, spandex, leather, or wool, be sure to air-dry all items on a nice drying rack. This will help your clothing items maintain their condition and shape and help you save on energy costs in your custom home.
